Possibly from the mistranscription of French zinc (“zinc”) [zɛ̃ɡ] or zingage (“galvanization”) [zɛ̃.ɡaʒ]. Cognate with Khmer ស័ង្កសី (sangkaʼsəy), Lao ສັງກະສີ (sang ka sī).
