Etymology

From Proto-Tai *mitᴰ (knife).[1] The long vowl of Thai มีด [miːtᴰᴸ²] shows irregularity as a reflex of it.[1]

Cognate with Lao ມີດ (mīt), ᦙᦲᧆ (miid), Tai Dam ꪣꪲꪒ, Shan မိတ်ႈ (mīt), Ahom 𑜉𑜢𑜄𑜫 (mit), Zhuang mid, Zuojiang Zhuang mid.
