From Pali virodha (opposition, objection, protest; enmity; discord, disagreement, conflict; etc) or Sanskrit विरोध (virodha, idem). Cognate with Lao ພິໂລດ (phi lōt), ພິໂຣດ (phi rōt), Modern Khmer ពិរោធ (piroot).
