Etymology

Borrowed from Sanskrit भिक्षु (bhikṣu, beggar), referring to a priest that begs for alms; perhaps via Angkorian Old Khmer bhikṣu (Buddhist monk).

ภิกษุ (pík-sù) (classifier ตน or รูป or องค์)

  1. (Buddhism) (พระ~) bhikṣu: ordained male who observes 227 precepts, as opposed to สามเณร (sǎam-má-neen) who merely observes 10 precepts.

Usage notes

[edit]
  • The classifier ตน (dton) is archaic.
  • The classifier รูป (rûup) is formal.
  • The classifier องค์ (ong) is now considered colloquial.
