[edit]From Proto-Tai *pliːᴬ (“banana blossom”).[1]
Cognate with Northern Thai ᨸᩖᩦ, Lao ປີ (pī), Shan ပီ (pǐi), Phake ပီ (pī), Zhuang be (“classifier for a banana”) (dialectal) and vi (ditto) (dialectal).
Sagart (2020) compared this word with Proto-Austronesian *punti (“banana”).[2]
