From Proto-Tai *pliːᴬ (banana blossom).[1]

Cognate with Northern Thai ᨸᩖᩦ, Lao ປີ (), Shan ပီ (pǐi), Phake ပီ (), Zhuang be (classifier for a banana) (dialectal) and vi (ditto) (dialectal).

Sagart (2020) compared this word with Proto-Austronesian *punti (banana).[2]
