From Proto-Tai *pliːŋᴬ (“aquatic leech”). Cognate with Lao ປີງ (pīng), Lü ᦔᦲᧂ (ṗiing), Shan ပိင် (pǐng), Zhuang bing. Compare Proto-Be *ɓiːŋᴬ¹, Proto-Hlai *hljiŋ.
