[edit]From Proto-Tai *ɟaŋᴮ, probably from Middle Chinese 秤 (MC tsyhingH, “scales”) or 稱 (MC tsyhing|tsyhingH, “to weigh”). Cognate with Lao ຊັ່ງ (sang), Lü ᦋᧂᧈ (tsang¹), Shan ၸင်ႈ (tsāng), Zhuang caengh.
