From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ɡiːmᴬ (pliers, tongs), from Proto-Tai *ɡiːmᴬ (pliers, tongs), from Middle Chinese (MC gjem, “pliers, tongs”). Cognate with Lao ຄີມ (khīm), Tai Dam ꪁꪲꪣ, Shan ၵိမ်း (kím).
