[edit]From Proto-Dravidian *puli (“tiger”). Cognates with Kannada ಹುಲಿ (huli), Tamil புலி (puli), Tulu ಪಿಲಿ (pili), Telugu పులి (puli) and Prakrit 𑀧𑀼𑀮𑁆𑀮𑀺 (pulli).
