Etymology

Borrowed from late Middle Indo-Aryan *sagaṇī, from an earlier *sagaṇiyā, from colloquial Old Indo-Aryan *śakan-ikā, formed from Sanskrit शकन् (śakán), the oblique base of शकृत् (śakṛt, dung). Compare Prakrit 𑀙𑀕𑀡 (chagaṇa), Marathi शेण (śeṇ), Konkani शेण (śeṇ) and also Tamil சாணி (cāṇi).
