[edit]From Proto-Dravidian *perV- (“big”) + ಪುಲಿ (puli, “tiger”). The formation is from the Proto-Dravidian stage; compare Tamil பெரும்புலி (perumpuli), Telugu బెబ్బులి (bebbuli), Kondekor [script needed] (berbullū, “tiger”), Ollari [script needed] (berpul, “tiger”), Kolami पेर्पुल (perpul).
