ಪೆರ್ಗಣ
Appearance
Old Kannada
[edit]Etymology
[edit]The first element of the word is from Proto-Dravidian *perV- (“large, big”), referring to the fact that bandicoots are larger in size compared to mice. The second component seems to be from an old Proto-Dravidian word for "rat"; compare Pengo [script needed] (ginen-orli, “a kind of rat”), Manda (India) [script needed] (ginen-urli, “a kind of rat”), Kui (India) [script needed] (ginesi-orli, “a kind of rat”), [script needed] (genesi-orli, “squirrel”). Also compare Kolami [script needed] (pegaṇ, “bandicoot”), Tulu ಪೆರ್ಗುಡೆ (perguḍe, “bandicoot”).
