Kannada

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Derived from Proto-South Dravidian *ten (south). Cognate with Tamil தெற்கு (teṟku), Malayalam തെക്ക് (tekkŭ).[1]

The South Dravidian word is perhaps an ancient loanword from Middle Indo-Aryan *dakkhiṇa, ultimately going back to Sanskrit दक्षिण (dákṣiṇa).[2]
