Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Dravidian *wiral (“finger”).[1] Cognate with Tamil விரல் (viral), Kannada ಬೆರಲ್ (beral), ಬೆರಲು (beralu), ಬೆರಳ್ (beraḷ), or ಬೆರಳು (beraḷu), Tulu ಬಿರಲ್ (biralŭ), ಬಿರೆಲ್ (birelŭ), ಬಿರೆಲ್ಲ್ (birellŭ), ಬೆರಳು (beraḷu), or ಪಿರೆಲ್ (pirelŭ), Malayalam വിരൽ (viral).[2]
