[edit]From నిల్చు (nilcu, “to stand”) + -ఎన (-ena, tool marker). On the other hand, could be from Prakrit णिस्सेणि (ṇisseṇi), from Sanskrit निःश्रेणि (niḥśreṇi), from Sanskrit निश्रेणी (niśreṇī), from the root निश्रि (niśri, “to lean on or against”).
