Etymology

From Proto-Dravidian *tenkāy (coconut), from *ten (southern) +‎ *kāy (fruit). Cognate with Tamil தேங்காய் (tēṅkāy), Malayalam തേങ്ങ (tēṅṅa), Kannada ತೆಂಗಿನ ಕಾಯಿ (teṅgina kāyi).
