Tamil

[edit]

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • (when geminated) IPA(key): /rː/, [tr]
  • (after nasals) IPA(key): /nr/, [ndr]

Letter

[edit]

(ṟa)

  1. A consonantal letter of the Tamil script.

Usage notes

[edit]

In spoken Tamil, however, its pronunciations have been increasingly indistinguishable with other consonants.

  • Single ற் () merges with ர் (r).
  • Geminated ற்ற் (ṟṟ) merges with த்த் (tt).
  • Postnasal ன்ற் (ṉṟ) usually merges with ண்ண் (ṇṇ), although at least in Sri Lanka or Sanketi dialect, it may merge with ண்ட் (ṇṭ) instead.
