From Proto-Dravidian *pakal (daylight). Cognate with Tamil பகர் (pakar, to radiate light), Telugu పగలు (pagalu, day), Kannada ಹಗಲು (hagalu, daylight, daytime), Old Kannada ಪಗಲ್ (pagal, daylight), Malayalam പകൽ (pakal, daylight).
