Usage notes

[edit]

It is not pronounced /j/ as in most Brahmic scripts, but instead as /dʒ/ due to sound shift, just like its Bengali equivalent . A very similar repurposing happened to the Latin letter J in many Western European languages. Its name is the same as the letter . A modified version of this letter, , is now used for /j/.
