Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀕𑁄𑀭𑀽𑀯 (gorūva), from Sanskrit गोरूप (gorūpa, cow-shaped), a compound of गो (go, cow) +‎ रूप (rūpa, shape). Cognate with Assamese গৰু (goru) and Bengali গোরু (gōru).
