[edit]Inherited from Prakrit 𑀯𑀺𑀆𑀳𑁆 (viāh), 𑀯𑀺𑀯𑀸𑀳𑁆 (vivāh), from Ashokan Prakrit 𑀯𑀺𑀯𑀸𑀳 (vivāha, Kalsi, Dhauli), 𐨬𐨁𐨬𐨱 (vivaha, Mansehra, Shahbazgarhi), from Sanskrit विवाह (vivāhá, literally “taking away [the bride]”). Compare Hindi ब्याह (byāh).
