[edit]Inherited from Proto-Indo-Aryan *daHiwā́, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *daHiwā́, from Proto-Indo-European *dayh₂wḗr (“brother-in-law, husband’s brother”). Cognate with Ancient Greek δᾱήρ (dāḗr), Latin levir, Lithuanian dieveris, Sanskrit देवृ (devṛ́), Old English tācor, Russian де́верь (déverʹ).
