Inherited from Prakrit 𑀕𑀼𑀚𑁆𑀛 (gujjha), from Sanskrit गुह्य (gúhya). Compare Old Gujarati गूझ (gūjha), गोझ (gojha), Old Marathi 𑘐𑘳𑘕 (guja).
