Etymology

From Early Assamese হন্তে (honte), from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀲𑀦𑁆𑀢 (santa) with locative -এ (-e), from Sanskrit অস্ (as). Cognate to Sylheti ꠅꠘꠦ (one), Kudmali হঁঁতে.

   Synonym: হয় (hoy)

   সত্ৰাজিতক ধৰি আনিব পাৰিলো হঁতে কিন্তু মিত্ৰৰ কাৰণেহে নোৱাৰিলো।

   xotrazitok dhori anibo parilü hõte kintu mitror karnehe nüarilü.

   I could have got hold of Satrajit and brought him, but I could not do (so) for the sake of a friend.

2. (used with present 3rd person suffix -এ (-e) after the verb.) present subjective, if

   মোক আজ্ঞা কৰে হঁতে খুচি মাৰিব পাৰোঁ।

   mük agga kore hõte khusi maribo parü̃.

   If (he) commands me, I may pierce (him) to death.

   লাগে হঁতে যি বস্তু কৈ আহক, আমি দিঞোঁ।

   lage hõte zi bostu koi ahok, ami dio͂ü̃.

   If necessary, whatever thing is asked for, we (shall) give.
