Inherited from Prakrit 𑀭𑀸𑀡𑀸 (rāṇā, king), masculinized from 𑀭𑀸𑀡𑀻 (rāṇī, queen), whence also রাণী (rani) (see there for more). Cognate with Hindi राणा (rāṇā).
