[edit]Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀚𑁂 (je), from Sanskrit যঃ (yaḥ, “who”, nominative masculine singular relative pronoun) or possibly from য (ya) + ই (i, demonstrative). It was formerly written as জে (je), but then respelled under the influence of the Sanskrit etymon.
