Etymology

Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀚𑁂 (je), from Sanskrit যঃ (yaḥ, who, nominative masculine singular relative pronoun) or possibly from (ya) +‎ (i, demonstrative). It was formerly written as জে (je), but then respelled under the influence of the Sanskrit etymon.
