[edit]Borrowed from Classical Persian مولوی (mawlawī), nominalized from Arabic مَوْلَوِيّ (mawlawiyy, “of the lord”), from مَوْلَى (mawlā, “lord”). The last two alternative forms come via Hindustani مولوی (molvī) / मौलवी (maulvī).
