Inherited from Prakrit *𑀩𑀩𑁆𑀩𑀽𑀮𑀸 (*babbūlā), from Sanskrit *बब्बूलक (babbūlaka), from बब्बूल (babbūla), वव्वूल (vavvūla), of substrate origin. Cognate with Odia ବବୁଲ (babula), Bhojpuri बबुर (babur), Hindi बबूल (babūl), बबूला (babūlā).
