[edit]Borrowed from Classical Persian بغداد (bağdād), probably from Middle Persian 𐭡𐭢𐭣𐭲 (bgdt /bagdād/), from Old Persian *Bagadātah, ultimately from Proto-Iranian *BágadaHtah (literally “god-given”); doublet of ভগদত্ত (bhogodotto).
