[edit]Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Prakrit 𑀧𑀼𑀝𑁆𑀝𑀻 (puṭṭī), 𑀧𑀼𑀝𑁆𑀞𑀻 (puṭṭhī) (perhaps Sanskrit प्रोष्ठी (proṣṭhī) is a Prakritism to provide a distinct root), probably from Sanskrit पृष्ठी (pṛṣṭhī), a variant of Sanskrit पृष्ठ (pṛṣṭha, “back, rear”), whence also পিঠ (piṭh). Cognate with Assamese পুঠি (puthi), Odia ପୁଠି (puṭhi), ପୁଟି (puṭi), Maithili पोठी (pōṭhī), Hindi पोँठी (põṭhī), पोँटी (põṭī).
