Etymology

From Gaudi-Kamarupi Prakrit ডাহিণ (ḍāhiṇa), from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀤𑀸𑀳𑀺𑀡 (dāhiṇa) with retroflexion, from Sanskrit दाक्षिण (dākṣiṇa, right), from दक्षिण (dakṣiṇa, right, south). Cognates include Bengali ডান (ḍan), Hindi दाहिना (dāhinā).

      biṣṇuko lekhila goṛuroro skondhe ati,
      ḍahinoto lokṣmī bamopaśe sorosbotī.
      Drew Vishnu on the shoulder of the Garuda,
      on the right it's Lakshmi and on the left side it's Saraswati.
