[edit]Etymology
[edit]Compound of জোনাক (jōnak) + -ই (-i, adjectival suffix), originally denoting something related to moonlight, from Prakrit *𑀚𑁄𑀦𑁆𑀳𑀸𑀓𑁆𑀓 (*jŏnhākka), from 𑀚𑁄𑀦𑁆𑀳𑀸 (jŏnhā) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓𑁆𑀓- (-kka-), from Sanskrit জ্যোৎস্না (jyotsnā, “moonlight; splendour”), a very early Prakritized form of দ্যোৎস্না (dyotsnā), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dyawtsnaH, from Proto-Indo-European *dyowtsneh₂, from *dyew- (“to be bright”) + *-t (extension) + *-sneh₂ (nominal suffix).
