Etymology

From Prakrit 𑀚𑀁𑀢 (jaṃta), from Sanskrit যন্ত্ৰ (yantra, “instrument for holding or restraining”), from Proto-Indo-European *yem-tró-m (“instrument of restraining”), from *yem- (“to hold, to restrain”).

   • 14th century, Madhav Kandali, Saptakanda Ramayana Lanka Kanda:

     লক্ষ্মণক মায়াশৰে আছে জান্তি । সি কাৰণে মূৰ্চ্ছা গৈয়া আছন্ত ন মাতি ॥

     lokṣmoṇoko mayaśore ache janti , si karoṇe mūrccha goiya achonto no mati .

     The magical arrow is holding/restraining Rama and Lakshmana; for that reason they fainted and are not talking.
