Borrowed from Classical Persian گنج (ganj, store, treasury), from Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (gnc /⁠ganǰ⁠/, treasure), from Old Iranian, perhaps specifically from Old Median *ganǰam. Cognate with Hindustani گنج / गंज (gañj).
