2. Used to express alienable possession

   আমার কাছে অনেকগুলো জামা আছে।

   amar kache onekgulō jama ache.

   I have a lot of shirts.

   (literally, “In my possession many shirts are.”)

3. with, on

   আপনার কাছে একটা পেন আছে?

   apnar kache ekṭa pen ache?

   Do you have a pen?

   (literally, “Is there a pen on you?”)

   আমার কাছে বইটা নাই.

   amar kache boiṭa nai.

   I don't have the book with me.

Usage notes

• This word can only be used in sense 2 to express alienable possession.
  • Therefore, this is incorrect:
    • *“আমার কাছে একটা মা আছে।”

      *“amar kache ekṭa ma ache.”

      I have a mother.

• When used as in sense 2, this word can be omitted with no change in meaning.
• Generally, this word is also optional when used as in sense 3, but its omission may cause ambiguity, much like in English:
  • তোমার কাছে একটা কলম আছে?

    tōmar kache ekṭa kolom ache?

    Do you have a pen on you?

  • তোমার একটা কলম আছে?

    tōmar ekṭa kolom ache?

    Do you have a pen?
