Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Middle Bengali এগারহ (egaroh), from Magadhi Apabhramsa 𑖊𑖐𑖯𑖨𑖮 (egāraha), from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀏𑀓𑀸𑀭𑀳 (ekāraha), from earlier 𑀏𑀓𑀸𑀭𑀲 (ekārasa) with debuccalization, from 𑀏𑀆𑀭𑀲 (eārasa) with reintroduction of the velar (compare এক (ek)), from even earlier *𑀏𑀕𑀸𑀟𑀲 (*egāḍasa) with rhotic fronting, from Sanskrit একাদশ (ékādaśa) with spontaneous retroflexion.
