Semi-learned borrowing from Sanskrit अदस् (adas) to Prakrit অমী (omi) to Apabhransa অঈঁ (oĩ) to Bengali ঐ (ōi). অই and ওই (ōi) are poetic alternatives of ঐ (ōi).

Alternatively, Semi-learned borrowing from Sanskrit असौ (asau) to Prakrit অহ (oho) to Apabhransa ওই (ōi) to Bengali অ (o), অই (oi) or ওই (ōi).
