[edit]Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘮𑘲𑘨𑘰 (hīrā), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀳𑀻𑀭 (hīra) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit हीरक (hīraka), from हीर (hīra, “thunderbolt”). Cognate with Gujarati હીરો (hīro), Hindustani ہِیرَا (hīrā) / हीरा (hīrā), Sindhi هيِرو / हीरो, Punjabi ਹੀਰਾ (hīrā) / ہِیرا (hīrā), Bengali হীরা (hira), Assamese হীৰা (hira).
