Etymology
[edit]Of unclear origin. Related to New Indo-Aryan [script needed] (*hiṭṭ-) and [script needed] (*haṭṭ-), and probably borrowed from a foreign source.
The meaning of "to be empty", attested in some texts, is likely spurious.
