From Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ʰáwHatay, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰewH- (to invoke). Cognate with Avestan 𐬰𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬌𐬙𐬌 (zauuaiti), Ancient Greek καυχάομαι (kaukháomai), Albanian zulë, Khwarezmian ɣwy- and Proto-Slavic *zъvati (to call).
