Borrowed from Classical Persian سیاهی (siyāhī, blackness, darkness, ink). Cognate with Assamese চিয়াঁহী (siãhi), Gujarati શાહી (śāhī), Kannada ಶಾಯಿ (śāyi), Marathi शाई (śāī), Punjabi ਸਿਆਹੀ (siāhī), Rohingya cíai, Santali ᱥᱤᱭᱟᱦᱤ (siyahi).
