Etymology
[edit]Apparently from a Proto-Indo-European *surgʰ-s-,[1] perhaps from *swergʰ- (“to take care of; to be ill”), and cognate with Proto-Germanic *surgō (“worry, care, sorrow”), though this is not entirely certain.[2]
