Inherited from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀲𑀭𑀇 (saraï) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓𑁆𑀓- (-kka-),[1] from Sanskrit सरति (sárati), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *sárati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *sárati, from Proto-Indo-European *sél-e-ti, from *sel- (“to run, flow”). Related to सरणे (sarṇe) without the -𑀓𑁆𑀓- (-kka-) extension. Cognate with Gujarati સરકવું (sarakvũ), Hindi सरकना (saraknā).
