From Proto-Indo-Iranian *samHáranam (battle, strife), from Proto-Indo-European *sem-h₃ér-en-o-m. Cognate with Avestan 𐬵𐬀𐬨𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬥𐬀 (hamarəna, battle), Old Persian 𐏃𐎶𐎼𐎴 (h-m-r-n /⁠hamarana⁠/, battle).

      kíṃ na indra jighāṃsasi bhrā́taro marútastáva.
      tébhiḥ kalpasva sādhuyā́ mā́ naḥ samáraṇe vadhīḥ.
      The Maruts are thy brothers. Why, O Indra, wouldst thou take our lives?
      Agree with them in a friendly way, and do not slay us in the battle.
