Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘭𑘹𑘘𑘲 (seṭī), 𑘭𑘹𑘙𑘲 (seṭhī) (compare 𑘫𑘹𑘘𑘧𑘰 (śeṭayā), 𑘭𑘹𑘘𑘿𑘧𑘰 (seṭyā)), from Prakrit 𑀲𑁳𑀝𑁆𑀞𑀺 / सॆट्ठि / ಸೆಟ್ಠಿ (sĕṭṭhi), 𑀲𑀺𑀝𑁆𑀞𑀺 / सिट्ठि / ಸಿಟ್ಠಿ (siṭṭhi), from Sanskrit श्रेष्ठिन् (śreṣṭhin). Cognate with Varhadi शेट (śeṭ), Ahirani शेट (śeṭ), शेठ (śeṭh).
