From Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćáHstā (commander, ruler; teacher), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱéh₁s-tōr, from *ḱeh₁s- (to command, rule, instruct, teach). Cognate with Avestan 𐬯𐬁𐬯𐬙𐬀𐬭 (sāstar, commander, ruler; evil ruler, tyrant), 𐬟𐬭𐬀𐬯𐬁𐬯𐬙𐬀𐬭 (frasāstar, commander).
