From Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćapʰás (hoof), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱoph₂ós (hoof). Cognate with Avestan 𐬯𐬀𐬟𐬀 (safa, hoof), Old English hōf (whence English hoof).
