From Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćánsas, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱéns-o-s, from *ḱens- (to announce, proclaim). Cognate with Avestan 𐬯𐬇𐬧𐬖𐬀 (sə̄ṇγa, pronouncement), Latin cēnseō.
