Etymology
[edit]From वि- (vi-) + Proto-Indo-European *pḗh₂ḱs, from *peh₂ḱ- (“to bind, tie, fasten”). Literally, “fetterless; free; unbound”.

गावे॑व शु॒भ्रे मा॒तरा॑ रिहा॒णे विपा॑ट् छुतु॒द्री पय॑सा जवेते ॥- prá párvatānām uśatī́ upásthād áśve iva víṣite hā́samāne.
gā́veva śubhré mātárā rihāṇé vípāṭ chutudrī́ páyasā javete. - Forth from the bosom of the mountains, eager as two swift mares with loosened rein contending,
Like two bright mother cows who lick their youngling, Vipāś and Śutudrī speed down their waters.

sasā́ra sīṃ parāvátaḥ. - Then from her chariot Uṣas fled, affrighted, from her ruined car.
When the strong God had shattered it.
So there this car of Uṣas lay, broken to pieces, in [the river] Vipāś,
And she herself fled far away.
