Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Iranian *HwidʰáwaH (“widow”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁widʰéwh₂ (“widow”). Cognate with Latin vidua, Ancient Greek ἠΐθεος (ēḯtheos), Russian вдова (vdova), Old English widuwe (whence English widow).
